ABOUT ME
I am a journalist whose career has spanned the U.S. power centers of Silicon Valley, Washington and Wall Street.

These days I teach news writing and editing as a professor of practice in the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications at Penn State University.
I came to Penn State from Bloomberg News, where I conceived, wrote and edited explainers on complex topics as a senior editor on the Bloomberg Explains team. Before that, I helped run the home page on Bloomberg’s digital platforms. I spent the previous five years editing investigative projects and legal news.

I was also an editor and reporter at The New York Times for more than a decade, covering Wall Street and Washington.

I covered information technology in the early days of the Internet explosion and taught journalism at George Washington University and Fordham University.

I’m a graduate of Stony Brook University, where I advise my college newspaper on financial matters.
I also provide free, one-on-one counseling to disadvantaged journalism students across the country as part of the Media Mentors / Journalism Mentors network.

I earned my master’s degree from the Newhouse School at Syracuse University and completed my formal training in intermediate Python and Pandas for data reporting.
